Spirited the movie staring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds was the latest adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Honestly, I would give the movie 4 stars, and one song 5 stars.
I was originally hesitant to go see this movie with the family. But, opted to go see it anyhow. There were a few eyebrow raising moments with some of the adult inuendo, but overall, this was a very solid movie. The highlight of the movie was the song and dance Good Afternoon. The quality of the song, production and choreography were over the top good. The Good Afternoon song is honestly Hollywood at its best.
There may be a spoiler or two here, but the overall theme of the movie is that Scrooge has been working to change the life of people at Christmas time, the way he had his life changed. With the help of Jacob Marley and a full staff of other spirits, they put on a production that similar to A Christmas Carol every year.
This particular year, Will Ferrells character decides to focus on the unredeemable Ryan Reynolds. It’s a fun take. I’m not 100% sure I liked the ending, but every story can’t have a happy ending. Sometimes the guy that changes does so at death, which is what happens in this case.
Anyhow, I would say due to some of the course language and adult inuendo and manner of death, it probably is a solid PG-13.
- There is no sex, no heterosexual or homosexual; not even any inuendo about it.
- The love interest are a black woman and white man, which was interesting. Will Ferrell falls in love with Octavia Spencer who seem unlikely to fall in love, but you could tell Octavia’s character was genuinely a good person. In general, she seems like such a nice kind soul. And she has a great singing voice.
- There is a shower scene. How can you have a Will Ferrell movie and not have him naked at some point in the movie. However, the angle is such that it isn’t too inappropriate. It’s fairly clean, due to him being covered in soap. But not so because you see him from the hip up.
- The language: I don’t think I heard a F bomb, but there is plenty of other salty language in the show.
